St. Petrikirche

St Peter’s Church, one of Chemnitz’s largest churches, forms a unique ensemble in the heart of the city together with the Opera House, the Hotel Chemnitzer Hof and the King Albert Museum. The church was built between 1885 and 1888 as a Neo-Gothic hall church based on designs by the Leipzig architect Hans Enger.

The organ at St Peter’s Church, with its three manuals, 57 stops and 3,902 pipes, was built by the organ-building firm Friedrich Ladegast of Weißenfels and consecrated together with the church on 18 October 1888. The instrument was rebuilt twice during the last century by the Dresden organ builders, the Jehmlich brothers.

During the Second World War, two of the three bronze bells had to be surrendered. In addition to various preserved items from St Luke’s Church, which was destroyed during the war, the St Peter’s parish also took over the church’s three-part steel bell chime.
