This cultural centre in the heart of Chemnitz offers social gatherings, events, education, art and culture. Lively, sensory, informative and relaxing – with this blend of qualities, DAStietz is a venue for all generations.

The building was grandly opened in 1913 as the largest and most prestigious department store in Saxony at the time, owned by the Hermann Tietz company. It was closed immediately after 9 November 1938. From 1949 to 1989, the building served the socialist retail sector as the ‘Konsument’ department store. It was operated by Kaufhof AG until 2001.

Since 2004, nearly a million visitors a year have been enjoying the attractive mix of culture, education and entertainment.

Today, DAStietz houses, amongst other things, the Chemnitz City Library, the Museum of Natural History, the New Saxon Gallery, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, as well as various shops on the ground floor. In the spacious atrium, interested visitors will find the ‘Petrified Forest’, a unique collection of silicified wood from the 290-million-year-old Rotliegend deposits in Chemnitz.
